Orthopaedic medicine is the examination, diagnosis and treatment of non-surgical lesions of the musculoskeletal system. This specific branch of medicine tackles musculoskeletal pain effectively and holistically across all ages, whatever the cause, using a variety of medical and manipulative techniques.
A combination of methods underpinned by a sound tested and fully rounded approach aims to give the client the best possible state of well being with relief of pain and restoration of mobility.
More on Orthopeadic Medicine
During the first hour of the consultation the practitioner takes a full clinical history and carries out a general medical examination so that the practitioner can treat you as a whole person, not just ‘a back’ or ‘a knee’. The practitioner then specifically examines the parts of the body that are causing a problem and arranges any blood tests, x-rays or scans, where appropriate.
The practitioner is in constant touch with specialists in other fields so that, if necessary, the client can be referred to practitioners in other specialities so that the treatment is comprehensive. After explanation of the diagnosis and discussion about the treatment, the therapist uses alone or in combination with the Power Assisted Micro-Manipulation (PAMM machine), dry needling, aspiration of fluid from joints, injection of local anaesthetic and hydrocortisone, sclerosing injections to lumber ligaments, epidural injections, spinal manipulations and nerve root stretching.
Selected combination of one, two or more of these techniques usually proves highly effective. The client may require only one or two treatments or a longer course of treatments. The practitioner has studied rheumatology and manual medicine at Guy’s Hospital and The Brook Hospital, and holds a Diploma in Physical Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians of London, receiving accreditation from BUPA, PPP and other medical insurance companies.
The practitioner has specialised in the relief of pain, whether it is due to trauma (car accidents etc), illness, deformity or simply wear and tear. The practitioner also uses his substantial knowledge of obstetrics for the specialist care of the spine during and after pregnancy.
